You never expected to find yourself in a dead end job. This was supposed to be a brilliant career move, but here you sit. It’s a few years later and you’re going nowhere and that lack of direction is starting to make you hate a job you were once excited to do. While all may seem lost, there are things you can do to breathe new life into your career.

Boost Your Knowledge
One of the best things you can do for yourself is to keep learning and this can be as simple as participating in courses sponsored by your employer. You can also take a few online courses that can benefit your career. There are many free and low-cost courses and certification programs available online.

Master New Skills
Similarly, you can master new skills, which may also involve coursework. Depending on your career path, you may be able to receive training online or you may have to attend an area vocational school. Mastering new skills can improve your value as an employee and open up new doors.

Volunteer for New Opportunities
If you have been overlooked for promotions in the past, that may have been due to a lack of initiative on your part. When special projects or new opportunities come up, raise your hand and dive right in. This shows your eager to try new things and it may also open up opportunities for personal growth.

Have You Asked About Your Future?
The squeaky wheel gets the grease. If you haven’t voiced your concerns or asked to be considered for new opportunities, you supervisors may not know you have the ambition to grow. It’s important to make your feelings known and express a desire to move out of your present position.

Pay Attention to Your Progress
Life can sometimes get in the way of your plans, so it’s important to be conscious of your career path. At the very least, reassess your situation every two years. If it seems as though you have fallen into a stagnant situation, employ some of these other suggestions to get yourself out of the rut. Ask for a raise or promotion, look for new opportunities, or learn a new skill. Any of these things can help you get your career back on the fast track again.
